TGOB Special – An Interview with Jim Koch from Sam Adams

During Philly Beer Week 2009, we got to sit down with Jim Koch, the founder of the Boston Beer Company, otherwise known as Sam Adams. We talk about everything from the early days of Sam Adams to how brewing a great beer is his ultimate goal – and how Sam Adams Boston Lager is his favorite beer.

Jim talks to us about his French knighthood in the Order of the Hops, how research continues to make his beer better, and the struggle that Sam Adams faces – even though they are the largest American-owned brewery in the world.

We couldn’t be more excited to bring you this extended interview with Jim Koch, and couldn’t have done it without the support of the Boston Beer Company, Philly Beer Week and Jennie Hatton, and of course the man himself, Jim Koch.

Enjoy!

TGOB: What is your favorite Sam Adams flavor?
  • We are big fans of the Boston Lager. It's a great example of a Vienna style lager, and it along with the Elliot Ness Amber Lager from Great Lakes are (in our opinion) the best Vienna lagers around.

Beauty of a interview! He's the best. His dedication is awesome. Great job guys.
  • 1. I want a beer. Now!
    2. I just became a fan of Jim Koch. Of his story, his company, his passion, his sense of purpose and mission. Really inspiring as a CEO or founder of something special, something done with absolute and pure love. (The question is, do we feel as passionate and commited to things we do everyday, as he does?)
    3. U guys were really nervous, LOL.
    4. Greetings from Mexico.

    I´ll stick around.
  • "Beer Quality and Company Culture", qualities that make any great company. Notice that management is never included in this equation.
  • An excellent interview and, I think, I landmark episode of TGOB.
