Episode 037 – Cristal, Toohey’s New

Two completely under-impressive beers, one from South America, the other from Australia. Both represent mass-produced beers from their regions, and unfortunately, it’s evident in the quality.

In regards to decent South American beers, I've had the pleasure of drinking some good Brazilian brew up here(AK). The Eisenbahn Escura(dunkel) and the Eisenbahn Dourada(kolsch) are what you want to look for. They should be in 12oz bottles and maybe you're lucky enough to have some of their other styles.

I've read that there's an Australian Craft Brewery called Baron's Brewing. Not to be confused with Baron Brewing in Seattle. They got a distribution deal with uhh United States Beverage. I can't seem to find what cities they actually distribute to, as the links that would have useful info like that point back and forth between their websites. However, they have a ESB, Lager, Pale Ale, and something called the Black Wattle Ale that looks enticing.

As for African beers, good luck. I've got no clue.
  • @salas - luckily we get decent beers from Europe and parts of Asia, but yeah, decent beer from South America, Australia, and Africa seem to elude us. I'm sure we'll stumble upon something... somewhere... :)

I like that you're trying beers from non-traditional beer locales, but I'm disappointed that so far they've all been pretty sucky. I wonder if it's because, as with Terrapin Brewery from Atlanta, you just can't get the quality microbrews from other places up here (even at the Foodery).

If someone in Germany/Belgium was doing a similar show, and the only American beers they could get their hands on were Bud and Miller, they might also come to the conclusion that all US beers were crap.

    Just a theory.
