Episode 15 - White Beers!
This week is all about White Beer, a Belgian style rich in history. Funny thing about these beers — none of them are from Belgium!
We start out with Philadelphia Brewing Company’s Walt Wit. Then we go to the far east for Hitachino’s Nest White Ale, from Kiuchi Brewery which is quickly becoming a favorite! Finally, we wrap up with Ommegang Witte from Brewery Ommegang, founded in Cooperstown and now operating on both sides of the Pond.
Show Notes
Walt Whit
ABV: 5.0%
Brewer: Philadelphia Brewing Company Philadelphia, PA

The Walt Wit is quite refreshing but tastes more like a traditional American lager than a White Beer. Still, its crisp body and light nature make it a nice alternative to traditional Whites.
Hitachino Nest White Ale

Brewer: Kiuchi Brewery, Naka, Japan.
Additional Information:
Hitachino Nest makes a fantastic White Beer! Kiuchi does the style service delivering a complex ale with an exciting flavor and abundance of spices. Orange, Coriander, and faint hints of rice or soy can be found when you continually taste this one. the Hitachino’s Nest family is quickly becoming a favorite and we just love the label design!
Ommegang Witte
ABV: 5.1%
Brewer: Brewery Ommegang, Cooperstown, NY.
Additional Information:
Brewery was started in 1997 by Don Feinberg, a lover of Belgian Beer. The Brewery was sold to Duvel in 2003 but keeps producing its family of Belgian Beers from its home city of Cooperstown.

I’m not sure Witbier is a Gruit. Yes it has spices (mostly Coriander and Bitter Orange Peels), but it is usually bittered with a noble hop like Hallertauer. I believe a gruit contains no hops at all.
@arkhamresident we’re going to have to start passing our videos by you for editorial purposes
@jeff, originally wheat beers were brewed with only gruit. Since then, hops have been added in various quantities by various brewers, but the gruit is (if you think of it as a separate ingredient group) still in there, mostly.
Dave you know that Hitachino Nest is one of my favorite lines out there. MAN that stuff is good. Red Rice Ale FTW.
I have been wanting to try Hitachino beers for a while now. I am not usually a fan of white beers, but I will give this one a try soon.

Unibroue’s Blanche De Chambly is also a nice Belgian style wit.
