Episode 014 – Saison Beers

In this week’s episode we dive into Saison Beer. A traditional Summer beer brewed originally for farm hands during the late summer harvest.

We enjoy two Saison’s from Brasserie Dupont. Saison Dupont a fine bottle fermented Saison, and Saison Foret, a wholly organic beer from a farmhouse brewery rich in history and tradition.

Like the new quality! You guys should check out some northwest beers on your show.

Congrats on the new tech stuff! Going back and reviewing the first episode versus this one you can really tell the difference in production. And you guys are getting much better at presentation too.

I really like the DuPont saisons that I’ve tried. I think Avec Les Bons Voeux is my favorite with Foret second and Saison Dupont third.

Fantome supposedly makes great saisons too but I’ve only had the Hiver and thought it was really odd. Only way to describe it is very spicy with an odd wood flavor.

Of the US saisons I’ve had Surly’s CynicAle (which coincidentally I acquired today) is the best. A bit more hoppy and tart than the others but quite good and it comes in a nice big 16 oz can. It isn’t can conditioned though.

@mark b: we’ve definitely focused on beers readily available to the Philadelphia market, but with tens of thousands of beers in this world (or more!) we have so much to get to! (Check out the next two comments below yours ;) )

@arkhamresident: I really like the Foret in that it is truly organic. There’s something pleasing about a fully organic beer – kind of like drinking beer in Germany, where they’re following 400+ year old brewing laws. Also, thanks for the kind words. (I’m personally looking forward to more farmhouse ales.)

Well done guys. Glad to see you are finally on HD, what are you using? we have been using Sony HVR-V1U’s from the start and love them.

I also like how you are starting to dig more into the history and details of the beer. Well done, excellent show.

It is obviously quite a way south of you, but if you feel like traveling to the ATL on August 16th, we are doing a live taping at 5 Seasons with Christina Perozzi, Matt Simpson, Chris Obrien, Tim Akimoff, and others…would love it if you guys could stop by and join us.
